Simeonstiftplatz is actually named after the monastery that was built next to the Porta Nigra in the 11th century in honour of St Simeon, who, as a hermit, was not exactly into parties and festivities. These days, it’s a different story: Since 2018, the edge of Simeonstiftplatz has been home to the statue of Karl Marx, a well known fan of drunken, social get-togethers. And with all its vibrant marketplace hustle and bustle, Simeonstiftplatz today provides the perfect setting for this.
